THIS

Greetings dearest Winthrop and thank you for the opportunity to check in with you this week!

First things first, much much gratitude for responding to my CHECK IN email! If you haven't, please check it out and feel free to respond directly to me. I really appreciate it especially knowing how overwhelmed many of you are, how ambivalent many of you also are and how checked out many of you are feeling right now whether you want to be or not. On that note....

However you feel in this moment is valid. Whatever you are doing right now to be okay is the right thing to do: Your Only Goal Is to Arrive

To that end, I want to share something with you about what’ going on at the College. And that is this:

WE DON’T KNOW.

Nothing is being kept from you. And IF something IS being kept from you then it is being kept from me, too, so we’re in this together on that front. When the news comes out about new academic policies I am right there with you figuring out the next steps and how to best take them, I promise you!

We are living in the unknown. It is uncomfortable. In fact, it hurts like hell. When everything feels chaotic stop and take a breath. Ask yourself, what is IN my control?

When you can answer that then you can start again. Whatever you do is the right thing to do.

This is sort of where I am right now, I think it applies to full-time students, as well, and that's why I mean it's absolutely okay if you're experiencing feelings of ambivalence towards school.

Breathe. Drink Water. Sleep Well. Tell someone how much you love them.

Very Truly Yours,

DC

Important news from Health Services, Your Honor Council Reps and about Harvard Summer School scholarships below!

Harvard Summer School and Scholarships

A limited number of need-based scholarships are available for students receiving financial aid, with aid provided based on need.

Applications must be submitted no later than Monday, May 4 at 12:00 pm.

Here is an overview of the criteria and process:

Application through CARAT. The application asks you to list intended courses (1 or 2), your reason for wishing to enroll in HSS and these particular courses, your alternate plan if not enrolling in courses this summer, concentration (declared or intended) and RD (Resident Dean, that's me!) or adviser approval. Other information can be pulled from HUID, including class year and residence.

Financial need: Full aid - full scholarship for up to 2 courses; partial aid - prorated based upon demonstrated need for up to 2 courses; no aid - no scholarship available ** If your financial situation has changed because of the pandemic, you should be in touch with the Financial Aid Office.

Academic need will be defined by at least one of the following:

  • students who are behind rate, whether because of COVID-19 disruption or other reason;

  • students who need specific courses as prerequisites;

  • students who need specific courses for concentration credit;

  • students who need to fulfill a requirement of the Harvard College Curriculum (including language courses, Gen Ed, divisional distribution);

  • students returning from leave (who are cleared to enroll by Ad Board, UHS)

Please keep in mind that HSS courses are intense, and while some students may benefit from the focus on one or two courses (rather than four), others may find the pace challenging.

Also, there is no requirement to take two courses to qualify for the scholarship.

An Important Message From The Honor Council From Your Fellow Throplings Julie and Eliza!

Dear Winthrop House Community,
We hope you are staying safe and healthy during these difficult times.
Our names are Julie ('22) and Eliza ('21), and we are in Winthrop House. We are student members of the Harvard College Honor Council.
Because members of the Honor Council recognize the challenges we are all facing between the end of the semester and the pandemic, we want to provide you as much support as possible, and we want to let you know that students on the Honor Council are here to help. Here are a few things we recommend:
Read the updated syllabi of all the courses you’re taking this semester, or, if the syllabus hasn’t been updated, take a moment to re-read the original syllabus. This way, you can stay up-to-date on and be reminded of the collaboration, extension, and citation policies for each course. Feel free to email your course staff for clarification questions.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to your Resident Dean or course staff if you require support or guidance on your work, including asking for extensions.
Take a few minutes to read the Honor Council's Top Five Tips.  This is the place to check out if you want to know some specific actions you can take that will help you uphold the Honor Code.
We are happy to help! Feel free to reach out to us at our email address listed below.
Best,
Eliza Oehmler, eoehmler@college.harvard.edu, House Class of 2021
Julie Hartman, juliehartman@college.harvard.edu, House Class of 2022

Important Announcement from Health Services:

We are pleased to announce that HUHS now offers video appointments for Internal Medicine, Urgent Care, Counseling and Mental Health Services (CAMHS), and Behavioral Health. During these unprecedented times, we want to ensure that you receive the care you need while upholding vitally important social distancing measures that minimize the number of patients at HUHS.

What is telemedicine?

  • Telemedicine allows you and your clinician to see and hear each other through a smartphone, tablet, or computer.

  • Telemedicine can be used as an alternative to traditional in-person care, and in certain circumstances, can be used to deliver care such as diagnosis, consultation, treatment, education, and care management.

  • Telemedicine allows for you to receive evaluation, drug prescriptions, and test orders.

To learn more about this digital health option and how to prepare for an appointment, please visit the telemedicine page on our website for information:https://huhs.harvard.edu/telemedicine-huhs

Schedule an appointment

Alongside our new video option, telephone appointments are available as well as in-person visits for essential and urgent care only (please call HUHS prior to coming in to speak with a clinician about your medical concerns). To schedule a video, telephone, or in-person visit, please call HUHS at 617-495-5711 Monday through Friday from 8am to 6pm. If you already have an Internal Medicine appointment booked, you will be contacted by HUHS to discuss your telemedicine options.

GRIEVING TOGETHER – GROUP – SPRING 2020

This group is an opportunity for Harvard students to support each other in grieving the death of a parent/relative, friend, colleague or similar type of loss. This could be a death for any reason be it a chronic condition, COVID, suicide or any other cause. It may be a recent loss or an old loss that is affecting you at this time.

This 4 week group will meet, virtually, on Zoom on Wednesdays: April 22, and May 6, 13 and 20, from 5:30-6:30. The group will be limited to 8 students, to provide sufficient opportunity for sharing/support.  The group will be co-led by Marla Allisan JD, LICSW (CAMHS/HLS) and Tammy McLeod (M.A. Pastoral Studies & M.A. Spiritual Formation) of the Harvard Chaplains. Open to all registered Harvard University students. To ask questions or register, please email: mallisan@huhs.harvard.edu.
